Design Statement

Runnymede is a private rural property located in Glenquarry, Southern Highlands NSW, on the shore of the Wingecarribee Reservoir. The property was purchased by the current owners in 2012. Since then, a suite of staged works have been commissioned, planned and implemented to overlay with the existing landscape of remnant native forest and exotic tree plantings. A legible landscape narrative has been formulated to seamlessly integrate the cultural traditions of picturesque parkland and garden-making, with sustainable rural land management and family food production.

The vision is for a celebration of exotic and native colour, texture and edibles within a regenerating remnant native landscape. A contemporary Australian rural design language is being developed to give curatorial order to this cultural landscape overlay in the context of the distinctive Southern Highlands landscape character.

Notable works to date include,

  • Arboretum terraces

  • Ornamental tree planting

  • 1km of regenerative native shrub planting to the road boundary

  • Extensive regenerative tree planting to maintain remnant Eucalyptus forest

  • Ornamental dam renovation

  • Pump shed sculpture

  • Machinery shed

  • Covered food garden and chook pen

  • Extensive orchard planting

  • Waratah garden

  • Bush-walking tracks
