Budget: N/A
Scope: Strategic Masterplan
Managed by the government authorities (SODEMO) the city of Noumea and the “Port Autonome”, the Strategic Masterplan for Noumea 2025, was delivered over a period of six months, with a vision to promote the culture and ambition of the city. The masterplan services for the regeneration of the Noumea waterfront and plays an important role in marketing the capital to the South Pacific and beyond.
New Caledonia is among the most biodiverse islands in the world; however, it is imperiled by lack of sustainable water, food, and energy sources, and by a reliance on hazardous nickel mining for income. The government has therefore made zero-carbon development an urgent goal. The detailed master plan addresses complex urban, ecological and cultural components to create a new vision and identity for the city of Noumea. With a zero-carbon goal for 2025, this scheme for the city’s waterfront aims to balance urban development with innovative energy and water infrastructure to reduce resource consumption.
The design of the waterfront in Nouméa has been developed to reprogram the existing land uses to support a unified view of the harbour, creating a new identity based on ecological principles, to bridge the gap between past, present and future.
